PopCap CEO, Dave Roberts will retire after almost nine years. Venturebeat reports that PopCap co-founder John Vechey will now head the EA owned developer. He plans to focus on casual, social and mobile gaming markets.
The change will go into effect on January 8th, leaving Vechey as the last remaining co founder since Jason Kapalka will leave PopCap at the same time that Roberts does. Kapalka will remain a creative resource that PopCap can tap into as needed.
With the appointment of Andrew Wilson as the new CEO of EA in September, EA has been restructuring the management trying to find solid ground. PopCap is no different. Vechey recognizes that PopCap has a lot of work to do if it intends to reclaim its throne in the community. "We need to get back to the place we used to be and not just in mobile," Vechey said in an interview with GamesBeat.
"PopCap's mission now is to create the greatest mobile game system in the world, and we're going to do that by only making games that are beloved by players. We're focusing on our foundation in 2014 - talent, process and most importantly, great products, around that mission."
PopCap is responsible for Bejeweled, Zuma and Plants vs. Zombies. Plants vs. Zombies Warfare is set to début this year. Vechey is sticking around to bring PopCap back to their glory days and feed the creative side. His sole purpose is to direct the company to their roots and do what they do best create the strange and zany games we all love.
