CAPE TOWN – Former political prisoner Lionel Davis, who spent several years on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela, opened his home to Eyewitness News for the official state funeral.

Davis spent seven years in the same section of the prison with Mandela, who later became the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

Eyewitness News received a warm welcome as he hung over the gate of his Muizenberg home, ready to tell his story of Madiba.

As the funeral service played in the background, Davis hardly watched and spoke more of his time on Robben Island and his talks with the Mandela. The conversation ends when Ahmed Kathrada appears on his television screen.

Davis watched attentively as he wiped away tears, commenting on how he never saw ‘Kathy' ever show such emotion during their time together on the Robben Island. (Edited by Tamsin Wort)
